My sister happened to have my birthday off this year, so she decided to come to town, and we spent the day sewing. We went through the fabric she brought with her to decide what we wanted to do. I settled on some adorable Halloween fabric to make a table runner. The only problem with this fabric was that we wouldn’t have enough for two table runners, one for each of us. Unfortunately, this meant we had to go to the fabric store in town…shucks *sarcasm implied*.
The ladies at the fabric store know us quite well, so when we walked in, they asked what we were up to. We just giggled and told them we might be making table runners and are probably using some Halloween fabric. They just laughed and told us to grab them when we were ready for our fabric to be cut.
We wandered around the store two or three times before we settled on everything we needed. We both decided we wanted the table runner to use the Halloween fabric on one side, but then have more of a Summer vibe on the back. I chose a fun-colored, abstract, citrus fabric. Bekah chose some fabric that had oranges all over it. Not sure why we both decided on citrus, but oh well.
Now, between my sister and I, she is the creative, free-spirited one, and I am the logical, number one. So this means that when we are together, I always have to decide how much fabric we should get. We normally don’t use patterns though because she makes up the design off the top of her head. So I end up walking around measuring things with my arms, and then we throw in an extra 1/4 or 1/2 yard just to make sure we don’t run out.
Since it was my birthday, Bekah let me do all the sewing and she did the cutting and ironing of pieces. We started with the four-patches of the gray and spider web fabric. We made a test one to make sure our measurements would come out square, and let’s just say that it is good we did.
After we had enough of those sewn and cut for both of us. I sewed all of mine together with the yellow headstone squares to create the bottom strip. Then I added the mint green strip and finally the fabric with the poison bottles.
We sandwiched the bottom fabric with the batting and top fabric. Once all three layers were stacked, I let my sister cut the batting down to a small size, since it was a large piece. This was a mistake. She cut the batting on top of the back fabric, and before I could tell her to move the bottom fabric out of the way, she had already cut a slice right in the middle of the fabric. Needless to say, some interesting language flew out of my mouth. Since the damage was already done, I took over so it wouldn’t happen again. Luckily the cut was close enough to the edge, that it could be worked around so that it wouldn’t be too obvious.
The next step was to quilt the three layers together. I love using the fun designs programmed into the sewing machine, so I always try to use at least one. I used the fun-squiggle design on either side of the mint green fabric.
I am so happy with how it turned out! The only part that is left is to put the binding on. I have it all cut out and ironed, but I keep procrastinating because I know that it is my least favorite part. It has been sitting like this for over a month, but I will finish it someday soon, hopefully.
Until then, it’ll just stay out of the way, haunting my free time *no pun intended ;)*. Maybe I’ll be able to use the backside next summer!
Happy Adventuring, Hannah
